SKA inc. Acceptance 18/10/11 - Letter from J. Cook
"Sensei Kym Reid.
It is with high pleasure that I write to you and confirm the acceptance into S.K.A. of yourself as a full member with the Rank of Third Dan with all the rights and privileges that entails. Your School, "Jinen Karate Jitsu", is fully recognised as a member School of the Szlagowski Karate Association Incorporated – Australia’s oldest Karate School and as such its heritage is seen to be that which is of the oldest Australian School.
My recent visit to your school was a pleasure.
John Cook. 5th Dan
Secretery Szlagowski Karate Association"

For those who are unaware, SKAI's grading system is only 5 Dan ranks then Master and G/master. Sensei Rob Dobson continues  to support the organization he was involved with for many years. So my instructor is still about and every certificate of grading can be easily verified. In fact the huge yellow patch I now have can only be worn by registered blackbelts of the Szlagowski line.

Sensei John Cook 9/10/11
A great night with John as he showed the trademark breaking techniques on bricks and later showed the "Carpenter Kata" He is a 5th Dan in a 5 Dan system and is secretary of the Szlagowski Karate Association inc. Thanks to all the members who were there to make him welcome and witness the strengthening of our heritage. I hope now you'll understand better the value of true lineage rather than a manufactured one because a "family" tree with no roots will fall very quickly.
Congratulations again to Jess on her achievements at the AMAC tournament, we'll have to get a few more of you there!

Jeff Speakman Kenpo 5.0

A special thanks to the  representatives who forwarded onto me a 10 DVD set encompassing their syllabus. I already have my son going through the moves. It appears to me that many styles of karate are seeing a decrease in membership, however kenpo (and Kempo) seem to being increasing in popularity. Perhaps because people prefer the drills and the English terminologies. With the Chinese influence that encompasses the more circular movements  it sits in well with what we do. Mas Oyama was influenced by his Chinese boxing and so Kyokushin has a focus on circular motions. My background included jujitsu with a kenpo karate base and even in Shindo Jinen Ryu you'll find that Konishi was influenced by the circular movements of Aikido.
News 1/10/11
Great to have had time with Sifu David Crook the other day. Please note the names I'm happy to have on this website because in Martial Arts there are those who need to hide their true history or struggle to understand the Budo principles and use other well known "brand names" to promote themselves. Some say they are "full contact karate" and yet have never fought in a contact competition or have never entered students in one. Even pictures of our training days are used  to dress up other websites. I guess writing that they "feel honored to train with me" I should take as a compliment but is not the case and they are only trying to align themselves with a real martial arts instructor.
The IBF has a strong network of instructors from many backgrounds and does it's best to work with the right people and the future role models to exclude the miscreants that bring martial arts into disrepute and preserve the Budo principles. Remember, any of us can just add stripes to a belt.

SPEAR seminar 27/8/11
Thanks to those who came along to Jim Shang's seminar on the SPEAR tactical system. I enjoyed it and gave more insight to some of the philosophies we incorporate. There is no way that you could run a self defence program, especially for women without some knowledge of primal reactions, emotional climate and recovery from flinch. While an arsenal of fancy techniques might work in a class it's different on the street. We will cover some of these conditions and how to be a "good bad guy" in a couple of weeks.

Womens Self Defence
Running the Womens Self Defence class at the WEA was a great experience and has finished for the year and thankyou for the great feedback. The group of 14 ladies I'm sure enjoyed themselves but learnt some life skills for their safety in the future. Hopefully I'll see some of them join us for the course next year. Summary sheets of the course are available for any of the ladies who attended if you contact me or request it through channels. Below is a photo of some of the participants who attended. Wishing you all a safe and happy Xmas, Cheers.

Sunday 29/1/12
Over the holidays I had the pleasure of catching up with my former Jujitsu instructor who was in Adelaide on a visit from Japan. Paul Jurkowski was a principle instructor of the RSL Judo and Jujitsu club in SA at the time and a signatory on my certificates. We would always spar before the lessons, great times. It was also good to hear from Nino Pilla and Zibby Kruk.
The Makoto Ryu Karate Do Asssoc. has now joined the IBF. Great to have friend Glen Doecke onboard who I met at a Jan De Jong seminar in 1991.

Part of grading with the Szlagowski Karate Assoc. is the breaking of bricks. Now I'll be ready for the future.

Qld. IBF Day 15/4/12
Last year I went to Qld to get a few martial artists together for a "meet and greet". While there I met a great bloke called Peter Hills who I selected to be Qld president to Terry Riches. On the weekend he held his first training day with many of my friends in attendance and a surprize attendance by Hanshi Patrick McCathy, the man who gave us "Habitual Act of Physical Violence" A great effort again with over 40 people attending the IBF Training Day there. Also the IBF continues to grow with the latest member Jason Griffiths now joining our ranks.

The IBF has gained much respect as an organization of creditable martial artists actively working to preserve the ethics in martial arts and helping their members to grow and build their community.
Past news below
Sth. Aust. IBF Training Day April 2012, the picture tells the story.

There are people who exagerate their attendance figures to try and fool others but then put up photo's that show the truth. One guy says he had 120, on Facebook says 70. The photo's show about 25.
So you can understand why I am proud of this latest IBF event. This years training day I decided to keep low key. The venue was smaller and it was to be on the Saturday so we figured there would be a lot of people working, but we were boxed into that date. Many of the regulars couldn't make it, but that was ok. The main thing was to make sure everyone was aware of the Fight for Life seminar on October 28th. Couldn't believe how many people came along. Over 80, twice the number I expected, we even had to have the nunchaku training outside.
To begin with was Terry Riches teaching Sambo takedowns and Mick Murphy with nunchaku. Next was Marc Miller demonstrating a Judo Kata and then taking his group through throws while Shawn Donaldson put people through their paces with Koryu Uchinadi drills. The next session David Gartland in his usual dynamic fashion gave an insight and some drills of Ed Parkers Kenpo while Damien Ellis had people scrambling with reactionary drills to get the hearts pumping. I shared the time with him to give a few techniques for the closer fighting system. During the break Dante jumped on the mat for a play and once Tracy had returned with the pizza we all took time out to introduce people to each other including 2 spectators who I was happy to have there, Hans Van Gelder and Adrian Hitch. After the break we all did it again. I must thank Brett Harrison and Ant’z Veen’s Zanshin Freestyle guys for continuing to support our events. It was good to see some of Nino Pilla’s students enjoying themselves as was Ivan McWilliams from Qld. Another group was an awesome lot of big scary fellows with Jim Nixon of Kombat Jujutsu. A great day. Thanks to all who attended and new members in the IBF, Kombat Jujutsu Club from Gawler and Marc Miller has joined us at Oz Warrior.
